Iceland Experience: Our Travel Expert Gives Us the Inside Track on her Reykjavik Trip!

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and the perfect hub for exploring its unique natural environment. But where to start planning your trip to Iceland? Our blog below could be just the ticket – and see our site for incredible travel deals!

Landscapes and Cityscapes, Iceland has them both!

With flight times clocking in at just 2 ½ hours it’s easy to see why Iceland is a popular destination for Irish holiday makers. The short travel time makes it convenient for city breaks, a weekend away or a long holiday too. Reykjavik is the ideal base for exploring the island’s wild landscape with epic fjords, geothermal pools and gushing geysers right on your doorstep – it’s really another world!

Annette, one of our expert Travel Advisors travelled to Iceland recently and we just had to share.

Reykjavik

Getting There

Iceland Air proved a comfortable way to travel and came with a strong recommend:

‘We travelled with Icelandair. The aircrafts were really lovely – very spacious seats, individual screens and free wifi.’

Upon arrival, transfer times to the city centre weren’t too bad:

‘The transfer from Keflavilk Airport to our hotel – Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina – right in the center of Reykjavik took about 40 mins.’

Annette gave the hotel props for its contemporary, creative decor and excellent location:

‘The hotel was modern and quirky. We were right at the harbour and could walk into the town within minutes.’

Things to Do

Any visitor to Reykjavik will find tons of activities and things to do, from soaking up the history and heritage to visiting truly awe-inspiring natural sights. Millennia of geothermal and volcanic activity has created a truly unique landscape unlike anywhere else.

Annette made the most of her trip with some of the local tours and activities:

‘The Mountaineers of Iceland, a popular tour operator, brought us on the Golden Circle Tour. This tour took up most of the day. We made 3 stops – Pingvellir National Park, Gullfos Water and the Geysers at Haukadalur. During this tour we were brought out on Snow Mobiles – definitely one of the highlights of the trip. We were on them for nearly an hour and the guides were excellent.’

Whale Watching was also a highlight:

‘We picked up a boat for a Whale Watching tour. We were lucky and saw some “Minke Whales.” This company offer visitors repeat visits if they are unfortunate enough not to see any whales.’

A guided tour to the famous Lava Tunnel near Reykjavik was followed by the even more celebrated Blue Lagoon. This is quite simply a must-see for any holiday to Reykjavik:

‘We were brought to the world famous “Blue Lagoon” – definitely another highlight of the trip! You need to bring your swimming clothes with you. On entry, there is a band placed on your arm which entitles you to one drink and then you can buy more with the use of your band. The staff were very helpful, even taking pictures with their iPads and offering to email them to you.’

And of course the Northern Lights tour:

‘That night, we took the boat again to see the Northern Lights which is a shorter duration that taking a bus trip. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see them that night, however again the boat company offer you a repeat visit if you didn’t get to see them!’

Our Travel Expert had this to say about her trip:

‘All in all it was a great trip – very busy but we were lucky to get the opportunity to see the famous sights, Iceland has to offer.’

Tips:

  • Book your excursions and activities prior to travel to make the most of your holiday time
  • Iceland is known to be expensive so budget appropriately!
