Things to do in Kos
Every step you take on the island of Kos is like stepping into history – so many of the island’s top sights get you up close with the island’s ancient heritage. Antimahia Castle is one of its best with an incredible view of the strait between Kos and nearby Nisyros. Neratzia Castle dates back to the 14th century and Asklepion was once the mainstay of famed ancient physician, Hippocrates. Explore Kos Town, too. Eleftherias Square is its heart with the Ottoman-era Defterdar Mosque, the Public Market, the charming arcades, the ancient walls and cafes great for watching the world go by. And check out the friendly resort town of Kardamena too. This is also one of the most bike-friendly Greek islands with cycling lanes around Zouroudi Beach and the city of Kos Town.
Dining out
Kos holidays come in all flavours. Well used to visitors, Kos’ chefs and restaurateurs provide everything a holidaymaker could want. If you’re staying in a resort, you can often stay right onsite and eat well every day – but then you’d be missing out all the excellent cuisine the island has to offer. Sample traditional Greek favourite in an authentic taverna, or go for something international and upscale in one of the many gourmet restaurants. Casual cafes dot the streets of the towns, too. Most restaurants are concentrated around visitor friendly areas like Kos Town, Agios Stefanos, and Kardamena. Try Greek cuisine, fresh Mediterranean flavours, Italian classics and more.
Holidays to Kos are a popular option for holidaymakers, so the island has tourism down to a tee. Many of the tourist-focused beaches have ramps, deck chairs, umbrellas, water sports, and everything else you’d need for a relaxing day at the beach. Some of the most popular are the sandy stretches of Kardamena and Tigaki, perfect for swimming and lounging around in the sun. Near Kos Town, discover Psalidi and Agios Fokas. The beaches around Agios Stefanos are also a top choice. For a more tranquil escape, seek out Cavo Paradiso on the island’s south coast, still relatively undiscovered and quiet.
Holidays to Kos are a great option for families of all shapes and sizes. Find family-friendly resorts with kids’ clubs and onsite entertainment, whatever your preference you’re sure to find something to suit. The beaches and historical sites are so much fun to explore – kids love the Castle of the Knights and the island’s last working windmill in Antimachia. The island has two waterparks – the Aquatica and Lido. The Lido Waterpark is the biggest in the whole of Greece with endless slides, pool and chutes to all to enjoy as well as wave pool and lazy river.
